Supposing I said there was a planet without schools and teachers, study was unknown, and yet the inhabitants - doing nothing but living and walking about - came to know all things, to carry in their minds the whole of learning: would you not think I was romancing? Well, just this, which seems so fanciful as to be nothing but the invention of a fertile imagination, is a reality. It is the child's way of learning. This is the path he follows. He learns everything without knowing he is learning it, and in doing so passes little from the unconscious to the conscious, treading always in the paths of joy and love."
About Maria Montessori
Maria Montessori was always ahead of her time. She was born in Italy in 1870. In her work at the University of Rome's psychiatric clinic, Dr. Montessori developed an interest in the treatment of children and for several years, wrote and spoke on their behalf. She constantly experimented and developed materials based on the needs, interests, and developing abilities of children. At the age of twenty-eight, Dr. Montessori became the director of a school for "unhappy little ones" which she called mentally disabled children. She spent eleven hours a day at the school, and late into the night at home, working on this project.
After two years under her guidance, these children, who had formerly been considered uneducable, took a school examination along with normal children and passed successfully. Educators called Dr. Montessori a miracle worker. What was her response? If mentally disabled children could be brought to the level of normal children, Dr. Montessori wanted to study the potential of "normal" children.
"When the children had completed an absorbing bit of work, they appeared rested and deeply pleased. It almost seemed as if a road had opened up within their souls that led to all their latent power, revealing the better part of themselves. They exhibited a great affability to everyone, put themselves out to help others and seemed full of good will."
What Is Montessori
Montessori (pronounced MON-tuh-sore-ee) education was founded in 1907 by Dr. Maria Montessori, the first woman in Italy to become a physician. She based her educational methods on scientific observation of children's learning processes. Guided by her discovery that children teach themselves, Dr. Montessori designed a "prepared environment" in which children could freely choose from a number of developmentally appropriate activities. Now, nearly a century after Maria Montessori's first Casa Dei Bambini ("children's house") in Rome, Montessori education is found all over the world, spanning ages from birth to adolescence.
Montessori emphasizes learning through all five senses, not just through listening, watching, or reading. Children in Montessori classes learn at their own, individual pace and according to their choices of activities from hundreds of possibilities. Learning is an exciting process of discovery, leading to concentration, motivation, self-discipline, and a love of learning. Montessori classes place children in three-year age groups (3-6, 6-9, 9-12, and so on), forming communities in which the older children spontaneously share their knowledge with the younger ones. Montessori represents an entirely different approach to education.
Montessori is designed to help all children reach their fullest potential at their own unique pace. A classroom whose children have varying abilities is a community in which everyone learns from one another and everyone contributes. Moreover, multi-age grouping allows each child to find his or her own pace without feeling "ahead" or "behind" in relation to peers.
Scientific observation has established that education is not what the teacher gives: education is a natural process spontaneously carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by listening to words but by experiences upon the environment. The task of the teacher becomes that of preparing a series of motives of cultural activity, spread over a specially prepared environment, and then refraining from obtrusive interference. Human teachers can only help the great work that is being done, as servants help the master. Why is Montessori so Successful
Research studies show that Montessori children are well prepared for later life academically, socially, and emotionally. In addition to scoring well on standardized tests, Montessori children are ranked above average on such criteria as following directions, turning in work on time, listening attentively, using basic skills, showing responsibility, asking provocative questions, showing enthusiasm for learning, and adapting to new situations.
Today there are research projects of all kinds being carried out on the results of a Montessori education. As children progress through true (as opposed to those schools who use the name, but have no certified Montessori teachers) Montessori (3-6), elementary (1-6), middle, and high schools, they become progressively more independent and responsible in action and thought. They carry out all kinds of original research and quickly outgrow a teacher's expertise in many areas. They move out into society and become thoughtful and responsible citizens much earlier than we previously thought possible, arranging field trips, social and ecological projects and movement, and apprenticeships. They develop such excellent study habits that they far surpass the level of the curriculum of traditional schools.
